Tales from the Couch

This morning,at the crack of dawn, Sue and I headed out (7.45am) and drove to the Bow Water Canoe Club-House on the the east side of Calgary. This was the start and finish point for the Frozen Ass 50km Ultra. This race is the first of eight ultra events included in the Alberta Ultra Series. The other ultras are Ironhorse, Blackfoot, Fast Trax, Sinister 7, Canadian Death Race, Kananaskis Iron Legs and Lost Souls. The Ultras range from 50km to 100miles and there's something for every one. Each ultra has it's own race organization but Gord, of Gord's Running Store, keeps track of everyone's results, allocates points and gives out the prizes at the Lost Souls breakfast banquet, the final event of the year. Over the last couple of years I completed a number of the ultras, explored country I would never otherwise have seen and met some great people including Andy, Alan, Hiro, Dan, Chuck, Logan, Darcy and Neil.

Avatar "Marathon Martin", on his virtual trip across Canada, has settled into his new surrondings in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He found a lovely B&B called "Little House on the Portage la Prairie" with excellent weekly rates. Over the weekend he checked out some of the local attractions and here is his report: One of the main attractions in Portage la Prairie is the world's largest Coca Cola can. It was constructed from an old water tower and is now located beside the local Canadian Tire and Westpark School. As well as a Potato Festival each summer, it is the world's strawberry capital and North American potato processing capital. During his stay Avatar "MM" will be compiling in-depth reports on, where to eat, the sport scene, local economy and the military, to name but a few.
